On December 10-11 2018, the Island Ark Project was invited to attend the 2018 Information Officers Meeting for Safeguarding ICH in the Asia-Pacific Region Conference in Seoul, Korea. This conference was hosted by ICHCAP and featured presentations from different UNESCO, Sahapedia, and other ICH safeguarding organizations. In attendance, Island Ark Project’s Rachel McAllister represented the team listening about the excellent work from these organizations.
The first day of the conference began with a keynote speaker from UNESCO and ICHCAP. Afterward, there were sessions pertaining to the infrastructure for information collection and management, as well as ICH knowledge-sharing network and platforms. McAllister presented during the first session, first encapsulating Island Ark’s November 2017 workshop in Palau as well as introducing Island Ark’s most recent follow-up workshop in January. During the second day of the conference, the participating ICH safeguarding organizations from different Asia-Pacific countries gave reports on their activities and programs. Some of these participants came from countries including Fiji, Nepal, Tajikistan, and Mongolia, all of who participated in multiple panel discussions within the conference. Throughout the conference, McAllister was able to learn about new advances in ICH safeguarding technology and network with other organizations about understanding best practices in ICH preservation. At the end of the day, the conference closed with a traditional Korean dinner.
The day after the closing of the conference, ICHCAP hosted a field trip for conference attendees to experience Korean history and culture. The group went to Gyeongbokgung (the National Palace), the National Folk Museum of Korea, and Insadong (a shopping street for traditional gifts and food).
From the Island Ark Project, we are all very grateful for the many organizations who have participated and attended to speak on their astonishing work for the further preservation of intangible cultural heritage. Island Ark would especially thank ICHCAP for this wonderful opportunity to learn, network, and showcase the hard work in continuing to urge the importance of preserving intangible cultural heritage!
